STEM OPTIONS

  • Join us as we explore the amazing ways 3D printing can be used to solve a variety of real world problems. Students will  learn how to use software to design 3D projects in response to a challenge. These skills will support students who can then use 3D printing for projects in their other classes.

  • Get ready to dive into the world of computer aided design (CAD) in our AutoCAD option.  This hands-on option will introduce students to AutoCAD’s user interface and then challenge them to apply their knowledge to create and edit 2-D drawings.

  • Coding is one of the most desired skills in the workforce right now! Get a head start on developing your coding skills by learning the basics right here at TCS. This class will give you the opportunity to learn various coding languages, such as block coding and JavaScript. With that language knowledge, you will learn to program working robots and even 3D print your own inventions.

  • In this course, students will learn how to properly use common hand tools, machines and materials to build an array of projects from wood. These skills can then be applied in other design challenges. Students will come away with many new skills and creations they can share with pride.

  • Decked Out: Identity Exploration through Skateboard Building is a CTF options course where students will connect with their identity and culture, explore their creativity, and gain self-confidence through hands-on learning. Students will brainstorm, design, create, and use technology to create (from the ground up) their own skateboard.

  • Ever wondered how each animal species carries out its function required for survival? Explore the fascinating diversity of animals by exploring evolution through research and hands-on dissections. This option is not for the squeamish at heart!

  • In extra-curricular science we will explore scientific concepts beyond the junior high curriculum. Students will explore many facets of science through different challenges and experiments including; participating in a dissection, compete in a science olympic challenge, use VR goggles to explore Mars, and field trips.

  • Go beyond reels and learn how to compose a variety of shots to create specific effects! Students will learn and practice a variety of shots and editing techniques. These will be used in a culminating film challenge.

  • Joining the Makerspace movement is an opportunity to foster and develop curiosity and to design in response to challenges. Students will use and improve their creativity and problem solving skills to brainstorm, design, create, and innovate by applying the design cycle process. They will have the opportunity to work on individual, team, and group challenges to make their ideas a reality, and work on a culminating project of their choosing.

  • ​In Music and Audio Engineering students will learn the basic functions of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and the fundamentals of digital audio theory. In Digital Music students will develop hands-on experiences with the hardware and software tools commonly used in the recording industry.

  • The goal of this option is to learn, play, design and create digital games via the Breakout EDU platform.  Through this process, students will be thinking critically, collaborating with peers, sparking creativity and learning to communicate effectively.  We are excited to see what our Senators will create!

  • Reusing and repurposing is both a step back and the way forward! Not only will students get to reduce waste, but they will also find ways to be creative, active, and involved. Students will use the Design Cycle approach to imagine, design, prototype and improve an upcycling product. They will showcase their passion for green issues while flexing their creative muscles!

PHYSICAL LITERACY OPTIONS

  • In Dance, students will explore different styles of dance to improve their physical literacy, music understanding, and performative skills. Students will be exposed to dance styles such as contemporary/modern, hip hop, jazz, broadway, etc. Students will learn how different ways of movement and physical literacy can apply to careers and physical communication/expression.

  • Students will investigate interests, passions and skills from a wide variety of physical literacy activities. Students will attend a variety of community activities that will challenge their physical literacy skills. This option will also expose students to different types of physical literacy occupations.

  • Students will visit different community centers that build an individual's health related fitness components (example - olympic lifting gym). Students will learn about different careers that explore a person's individual physical literacy.

  •  Students will explore how to improve/build their individual physical literacy. Using the TCS Fitness Center, students will set goals, track progress while implementing fitness programs. Students will learn about careers in the world of fitness.

  •  Have the chance to get outside and enjoy our beautiful city and weather! In this option, students will have the chance to participate in orienteering, frisbee golf, walks in our local community, outdoor scavenger hunts, and participate in some walks in our beautiful River Valley and/or Hawrelak park.  Come join us for some outdoor fun and adventure!

  • In each of these courses, students will learn how to perform the skills for one specific sport. Students will also gain experience in coaching and officiating while taking leadership in running school intramural programs.

FINE ARTS OPTIONS

  • This option allows students to explore techniques and materials to improve their drawing, painting and sculpture skills. Students will develop their skills and learn to express themselves through a variety of projects in drawing, painting, and mixed media. The art projects are adapted for all levels of experience in Art.

  • In Beginner Guitar and Ukulele, students will learn core skills that allow them explore music creation. The students will learn the following: How to treat and care for their instrument, how to tune their instrument , basic playing techniques, how to read tablature.

     

    Upon the successful completion of this option, students will have to skills and the knowledge to continue learning their instrument independently.

  • How can we use images to communicate emotion and story? Comics and Cartooning is an introduction to sequential art. After looking at the elements of comics and graphic novels, students will spend the course playing with different art styles, creating their own original characters, and telling stories and jokes of their choice through the creation of their own comic strips.

  • Have a passion for storytelling and using your creativity to make your thoughts and ideas come to life? This is the place for you! In this option, students will dive deeper into writing strategies and learn how to make their stories really pop off the page.

  • This course aims to teach children the fundamentals of digital art. Using Apple iPads, and the design app "Procreate," students not only learn the design basics, they also have the creative freedom to explore and generate their own original ideas! Essential hands-on activities include basic lighting studies, introduction to colour theory, various digital painting techniques, understanding perspective drawing and composition, while studying the works of contemporary Canadian Indigenous artists.

  • Explore your creative side through a variety of different activities!  Drama helps develop you as a whole person: emotionally, physically, intellectually, imaginatively, aesthetically, and socially.  This course fosters positive group interactions and opportunities through exploring: movement, voice, theatre games, improv, and scene study.  Drama is always an adventure, so be brave and come build transferable skills that will help you better express yourself in any situation!

  • Have you ever wanted to be a part of a theatre production? Now is your chance! Take part in the process from auditions all the way to the performance of a production.  This course will help you develop your acting skills and help you work together as a team to create a product.  Along the way we will learn about the technical elements needed to create a cohesive product such as costumes, sets, lighting, and sound.  Self-discipline, imagination, teamwork, and the ability to have fun are all needed!

  • Students will explore a wide variety and range of film types and units of study, including film history, shot composition, editing techniques, animation, special effects, sound in film, film ratings, specialists that help make a film, and individual genre-based units of study.

  • Performative Music is an option course for dedicated musicians. Performative Music Students will be playing a variety of contemporary instruments in an effort to produce a musical performance. Students will analyze and select appropriate songs that they will learn as a group. Students will learn effective individual and ensemble practice techniques as well as musical techniques that will build their skills. Students will also gain some basic knowledge surrounding the setup and use of a 14-channel mixing board.

  • Through innovative digital modules that offer choice, students will explore the technology, theory, and art forms that comprise photography and graphic design. Students will use entry level DSLR Cameras and Canva to construct and relay a message for the purpose of connecting, informing, entertaining or selling products. Students will finish the course with a digital portfolio.

  • Screen printing is a versatile printing process that involves pressing ink through a stenciled mesh screen to create a printed design. In this CTF course, students acquire new knowledge about the fundamentals of graphic design and use applied skills & technology to create an art print on a t-shirt which they get to take home.

  • Music class for students who want to work on their internal instrument - the voice! Students will work on their individual skills while contributing to the repertoire of the group, supported by a local clinician.  All experience levels will be included as students work in their vocal range and then learn how to stretch their range.

HEALTH & SOCIAL SCIENCE OPTIONS

  • How can we blend our love of eating delicious food with the responsibility of maintaining a balanced approach to nutrition?  Students will learn how to take favorite and everyday recipes to give them a healthy twist; learn what it takes to pursue creative and rewarding careers as a chef, baker, nutritionist and other areas of the food industry overall.

  • Students will explore the various anatomical systems of the human body.  Their learning will prepare them for the challenge of designing and building a working model of one system.

  • Indigenous Studies provides as positive, meaningful opportunity for students to enhance their foundational knowledge and understanding of the rich and vibrant diversity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in Canada.

  • Follow in the footsteps of  the Honourable Thelma Chalifoux! In this course, students will take the lead in determining a need in our community and then creating a number of activities to support efforts for their chosen charity or foundation.

  • Sports medicine will dive into understanding the role of different sports-focused health professionals. We will also focus on understanding other important parts of sports performance such as diet and nutrition. There will be a hands-on portion where students will learn more about taping and supporting sports-related injuries.
